Manga High – Free Mathematics Games

by noreply@blogger.com (Mr. Byrne) From Free Technology for Teachers a great resource site.

Manga High is a new site offering free mathematics games for K-12 students. There are four games and a quiz program that offer graduated activities. Students earn gold, silver, and bronze “coins” to track their progress. While the games and quiz program are free, the rest of Manga High is a fee-based service.

Applications for Education
Manga High, like a lot of mathematics games sites, provides an intuitive and engaging platform for students to use to practice their mathematics skills. One of the benefits of Manga High is that it doesn’t have the intrusive advertising that some mathematics game sites have.

Wolfram Mathworld: Making the math world slightly less frustrating

From Instuctify
by Bill Ferris
BY JASON DON FORSYTHE

If only Wolfram Mathworld had been around when I was banging my head against the wall trying to learn calculus, perhaps things would have been a lot easier. A predecessor of Wolfram Alpha, Mathworld lives up to its motto of being “The Web’s Most Extensive Mathematics Resource.” It’s a clearly thought out resource of mathematical terms, concepts, and visual references. Think of it like a math version of Wikipedia, but it’s not open to the public editing it. You can enter a concept in the search area, and it’s quite good at matching up the relevant information. Or you can use the left-side menu bar to navigate to your area of interest.

Free Math Help

by
From Free Technology for Teachers

Every time I find a website like Free Math Help I wish that the Internet had been readily accessible to me as a high school student because my mathematics grades could have used the free help. Free Math Help, as the name implies, offers students free mathematics tutorials. Tutorials are available as text based lessons or narrated video lessons. Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Calculus, and Statistics tutorials are available for free to students. If, after watching the tutorials students have more questions, students can head over to the message boards to ask clarifying questions.

Applications for Education
Free Math Help is a good resource for middle school, high school, and some undergraduate students to find mathematics help when you’re not available. If you’re a mathematics teacher, Free Math Help is a good website to link to your class blog or website.

Mathematics in the Movies

by

Mathematics in Movies is a website developed by Oliver Knill, a Harvard Mathematics professor. Mathematics in Movies is a collection of video clips from popular movies and television shows in which references to mathematics are made. One of the most recent clips comes from an episode of The Office in which Oscar tries to explain the concept of a budget surplus to Michael. I’ve embedded the episode below.

Applications for Education
The video clips from Mathematics in Movies could be a fun way to introduce a mathematics lesson. The clips might also be useful as a break from a traditional lesson plan for a day. Students can enjoy the clips while reviewing mathematics concepts.
